Rare Quart-Sized Little Falls, NY Stoneware Advertising Jug, Incised "Lent", New York State origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jug with tapered spout, featuring the impressed and cobalt-highlighted advertising "CASSLER BRO'S / LITTLE FALLS NY". Incised below with the cobalt-highlighted inscription, "Lent," the potential meanings of which are several. This jug may have been made for use during the Christian season of Lent. Alternatively, it may have been inscribed with this word to denote that the jug was a loaner, meant to be returned to the merchant, Cassler Bros., after it was emptied. Finally, "Lent" may refer to the potter's name or the person for whom the jug was made. An unusual example of New York State advertising stoneware. Restored handle. Some black flecks of paint to surface of jug, applied accidentally when the handle was restored. H 7 1/2".
