Very Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning Jar, Stamped "CARVER & WIGHTMAN / EDINBURGH", Virginia origin, circa 1850-1865, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder and flared wax sealer rim, decorated with a three groups of graduated swags emanating from the base. Impressed with the maker's mark of Hiram Carver & William Wightman at the shoulder. Signed examples by this potting firm are considered exceptionally rare, and this jar is the first we have ever offered bearing this mark. The decoration on this jar is unusual for the maker, differing markedly from the tulip motifs most commonly found on this firm's signed ware. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in Georgia. Cracks at base, connecting to a 3 1/2" reglued section at base, which includes a small chip on underside. Some additional thin lines at base. A chip to inner wax sealer rim. H 10".
