Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "W-A-LEWIS / GALESVILLE - N-Y", circa 1858, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a folky slip-trailed design of a deer with turned head and striped body, standing between a tree and shrub. Heavily-slip-trailed ground below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Signed W.A. Lewis stoneware is considered scarce in its own right. This crock is the first example with deer decoration we have seen. Restoration to a 5" x 3" area of flaking to right side of crock's front, extending onto right side of crock, not touching decoration. Large area of restoration on reverse, continuing onto underside. A note from the restorer on the interior indicates this restoration conceals a single crack. An in-the-firing iron ping to front below deer.
