Three-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Paddletail Bird Decoration, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON, / UTICA, N.Y.", circa 1885, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a crested bird with paddle-shaped tail perched on a flowering vine. Excellent color with bold, dark cobalt against a light clay ground. A classic White family design on a desirable form. A 2" hairline from rim on reverse. Wear to inner rim where a lid would rest. Some touch-up to cobalt on bird, most visible on a section of the raised slip-trailed lines forming the bird's back and wing.
