Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "S.C. BROWN, / HUNTINGTON," Long Island, New York, circa 1879-1882, ovoid form with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with three brushed flowers conjoined at the stem. Light cobalt highlights to maker' mark of Stephen C. Brown at shoulder. Unusual form and desirable maker. Literature: Illustrated on page 46, fig. 56 of USEFUL ART Long Island Pottery, Cynthia Aarps Corbett, Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, 1985. A 2 1/2" restored section to exterior of rim on reverse. A short line at base on reverse. Numerous tiny nicks to interior of rim.
