Extremely Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Presentation Crock, Stamped "BROWN BROTHER , / HUNTINGTON, / L.I.", circa 1870-1885, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with the brushed cobalt inscription "OSCAR MILLS / PATCHOGUE / LI", surrounded by brushed flowers in the Brown Brothers style. Oscar W. Mills, the owner of this crock, was born in Smithtown, Suffolk County, NY in 1835 and died in Patchogue, NY in 1905. Few inscribed pieces produced at the Brown Brothers Pottery are known. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Crock broken into pieces and restored, with limited touch-up to cobalt.
