Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, James River, VA origin, circa 1820-1825, highly-ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a circular flower blossom emanating from a leafy stem. Cobalt highlight to edge of remaining handle. The design on this early jar can be linked to John P. Schermerhorn's popular circular floral motifs of later years. The majority of one handle is missing. A shallow flake to underside of opposite handle. A 2" chip to side of rim. A 6 1/2" vertical spider crack on one side, continuing approximately 5" onto underside. A stone ping under one handle.
