Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "F.J. CAIRE, / Huntington, / L.I.," circa 1854-1863, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, stepped rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large curved tulip design with spotted stamen. Decorated above with a brushed freehand number 3 with swag. Excellent decoration and color. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Literature: Illustrated on page 40, fig. 38 of USEFUL ART Long Island Pottery, Cynthia Aarps Corbett, Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, 1985. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a small rim chip.
