Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Abstract Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "BROWN. BROTHERS / HUNTINGTON. L.I", circa 1863-1870, cylindrical form with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with three brushed looping lines of cobalt. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Few cake crocks produced at the Brown Brothers Pottery are known. The decoration on this example is likewise unusual. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Restored top-to-bottom crack from rim to right of decoration. Otherwise excellent, essentially as-made condition.
