Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Reclining Deer Decoration, Stamped "EDMANDS & CO.", Charlestown, MA origin, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a deer with turned head and heavily-spotted body, reclining between two curved fences with trees at each end. This example is the first Edmands cake crock we have seen featuring the pottery's highly-prized deer motif. One handle professionally restored. A few minor flakes to surface on left side of crock's front. A 7/8" chip to interior of rim and a small chip to exterior of rim. A small in-the-firing iron ping to reverse. A 1 5/8" in-the-firing iron ping to underside at edge. Some exfoliation to underside and interior. H 7 1/4" ; Diameter 11".
