Extremely Rare Large-Sized Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "LEWIS & GARDINER / HUNTINGTON, L I", circa 1827-1829, approximately seven-gallon, keg-form cooler with heavily-tooled banding and circular bunghole, impressed with Lewis & Gardiner maker's mark at shoulder. Cobalt highlights to banding, bunghole, and maker's mark. Exceptional form and size. Water coolers from this region are considered highly unusual, and this example is the only one of its kind we have seen from the Lewis & Gardiner Pottery. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Entire bunghole professionally-restored. Restored 2" chip and 1/2" chip to rim. Additional restored chips to base. Expected wear and tiny nicks to edge of base and rim. H 18 3/4".
