Unusual Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt X Decoration, Stamped "BROWN BROTHER , / HUNTINGTON, / L.I.", circa 1870-1885, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of four X's separated by spots. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Two short hairlines at base, continuing a short distance onto underside. One handle chip. A glazed-over, in-the-firing line on interior, partially visible on exterior above one handle. A minor hairline in rim. A 1" hairline from rim on reverse. A minor chip and typical wear to inner wear where a lid would rest.
