Very Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1820, approximately one-pint jar of highly-ovoid form with footed base, flared rim, and narrow opening, decorated around the shoulder with a series of five slip-trailed daisies featuring spotted blossoms and graduated leaves. This jar is one of only two Baltimore examples we are aware of potted in this specific form and size. Both may have been designed as ginger or tobacco jars. A fine example of early Baltimore stoneware in all respects. Excellent, as-made condition with a minor in-the-firing chip to rim, a minor in-the-firing chip to base, and a few in-the-firing contact marks to shoulder. H 6 1/4".
