Scarce Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Lone Star, PA Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring stenciled advertising for "IMRI TAYLOR / LONE STAR, / GREENE CO, PA.". Decorated above with stenciled floral designs. Brushed cobalt stripes to the shoulder and base. Large stenciled "5" with flourishes at base. The typical cobalt highlights to the handle terminals include unusual short, striped strokes. A fine example of Western PA advertising stoneware. Small, semi-circular crack at base on reverse. 5" surface crack on underside, not visible on interior and possibly in-the-firing. A small stone ping to reverse. A 1 3/8" hairline at base on reverse, extending 2 1/2" onto underside. Some fry to cobalt.
