Extremely Rare and Important Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Decoration, Stamped "J. REMMEY / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK," circa 1810, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on the front with an incised cartouche surrounding the maker's mark of John Remmey III. Reverse with incised, stylized foliate design in the Manhattan style. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, incised foliate decoration, and handle terminals. This jar ranks as one of the finest John Remmey stoneware pieces we have ever offered. It is one of only two half-gallon, handled jars by this important Manhattan maker we have auctioned. The addition of incising around the maker's mark classifies this pot as the finer of the two. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a few in-the-firing base chips and an in-the-firing iron ping to rim. H 7 5/8".
