Fine Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, attributed to the Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with semi-rounded rim, distinctive ribbed handles, and incised banding around midsection, the front decorated with finely-brushed, sweeping vines in the Morgantown style. Vine at shoulder includes a flower. Shoulder with additional cobalt banding. Base with graduated freehand stripes. Brushed cobalt running the length of each angled handle terminal. Impressed with Morgantown six-gallon capacity mark on reverse. Excellent color. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in a West Virginia home. Y-shaped hairline at base on front, continuing onto underside. Some staining at base. Small chips to interior of rim. 2 1/2" faint Y-shaped line on side of jar, not visible on the interior, and probably in-the-firing.
