Scarce Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA," circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, thin rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a sweeping vine bearing two tulip blossoms in the classic Swank style. Floral accents to handle terminals. Area below one handle impressed with a large, rectangular Swank maker's mark and the number "6". Excellent size. Large, thin star-shaped crack on side of jar. Some in-the-firing flaws, including a 1 1/4" chip to underside at edge, a 1" chip to surface near base, a section of crazing to rim area, and 1 3/4" salt drip near rim. Additionally, a smooth chip to end of one handle, possibly in-the-firing.
