Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Stephen B. Sweeney, Henrico County, VA, mid 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed tulip with long, curving stem. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and appealing accidental cobalt drips elsewhere on handles. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a Southeastern Virginia collection amassed decades ago. A 2" rim chip and another minor rim chip. A chip to rim molding. A 2" crack from rim. Heavy chipping to one handle. Heavy exfoliation under one handle.
