Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, James River Valley of VA origin, second quarter 19th century, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and tall collar with flattened rim, decorated on both sides with wavy stripes of cobalt flanking the number "4". Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Majority of one handle missing, possibly during the firing. 2 1/2" chip to rim. Hairlines to shoulder. An in-the-firing separation on underside, with a hairline extending through it.
