Very Rare Stoneware Frog Mug, Inscribed "Anna Pottery My Home" and "Anna Pottery", Anna, IL, circa 1885, cylindrical mug with footed base, tooled shoulder, and canted rim, the interior with a molded and applied figure of a frog with impressed eyes and incised feet and mouth, seated in a pool of melted glass resembling water. Frog with original green cold-painted surface. Exterior of mug incised with the large inscription "Anna Pottery My Home", and covered in chocolate-brown Albany slip glaze. Underside incised in large script "Anna Pottery". This example is interesting in that the penmanship does not match the distinctive Kirkpatrick styles known. The subject matter of the inscription on the mug, as well as the signature on the underside, are also unusual. It is therefore likely that the mug was made and inscribed by an employee at the Kirkpatrick Pottery, and not one of the brothers themselves. A particularly rare example of a desirable Anna form. Excellent condition with a minor glazed-over rim nick, and two other minor rim chips, which may have also occcurred in the firing. H 3 1/8"; Diameter (at base) 4 1/4".
