Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped Twice "J.B. PFALTZGRAFF & CO. / YORK, PA," circa 1855-1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a fan-tailed bird with crest and heavily-shaded body, perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark on front. Additionally stamped with a second J.B. Pfaltzgraff maker's mark on reverse. Excellent size, decoration, and condition. Relatively few John B. Pfaltzgraff bird-decorated pieces are known. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found among the contents of a Baltimore County, MD farm. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. Pfaltzgraff stoneware pieces in such remarkable condition are difficult-to-find.
