Very Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Shorebird Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, NY," circa 1885, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a folky slip-trailed design of a long-billed shorebird with turned head and heavy feather detail, standing between two patches of reeds. Slip-trailed "6" above. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Desirable size and maker. A highly unusual variety of bird in American stoneware decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in a forty-year Pennsylvania antiques collection. Three chips on exterior of rim, the largest measuring approximately 1". Two minor chips on interior of rim. H 14 3/8".
