Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Slip-Trailed Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied tab handles, decorated with a slip-trailed tulip plant featuring three blossoms and heavily-leafed stems. Shoulder decorated completely around circumference of jar with two wavy slip-trailed lines. Well-decorated reverse of jar features a horizontal design of seven tulip blossoms. Additional slip-trailed wavy line design under each handle. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found in the Mid-Atlantic. Small chips to one handle. A recessed in-the-firing contact mark on reverse.
