Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a circular flower blossom extending from a curled leafy stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. An unusual design for Julius and Edward Norton stoneware. 8" fairly-tight spider crack from rim on front. Wide 7" inverted Y-shaped crack from rim on revers. Minor nicks to interior of rim. Shallow 1" chip on side of rim. Faint Y-shaped line on underside, not visible on interior. Some wear to cobalt.
