Very Rare One-Gallon Shenandoah Valley Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Swag and Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. EBERLY & BRO. / STRASBURG, VA," circa 1885, slender pitcher with ovoid midsection and tall, flaring collar, decorated around the body with three groups of brushed cobalt swags interspersed with two flower buds. Handle heavily-decorated with brushed stripes, along with a cobalt highlight at base of handle. Impressed with the maker's mark, "J. EBERLY & BRO. / STRASBURG, VA", on one side of spout, and on the opposite side of the spout with a one-gallon capacity mark. A graceful form by one of the Shenandoah Valley's most highly-regarded potteries. Few signed Eberly pitchers are known. 1" restored chip to right side of spout, mostly visible on exterior. Minor base chip. Thin crack through handle. 2 7/8" crack from rim on reverse.
