Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Cobalt Floral Decoration and Impressed Test Marks, Stamped "WHITES UTICA," New York State origin, circa 1870, cylindrical jug with tapered spout, decorated with a boldly-brushed tulip plant bearing two very large blossoms. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Jug is additionally impressed "WHITES UTICA" three times vertically on the side of the shoulder, presumably to test the mark's impression. In-the-firing chip to underside at edge. A few in-the-firing chips to bottom edge, including a shallow 1 1/2" in-the-firing chip to base on front. A contact mark with small iron ping on shoulder. A minor iron below lower handle terminal.
