Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA," New York State origin, circa 1865, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with turned head and fan-shaped tail perched on the stem of a flowering paint. Cobalt highlights to maker's and capacity marks. 3 3/4" hairline from rim on left side of churn's front. Restored 3" x 2 1/2" section to rim and shoulder on right side of churn's front. This restoration is presumably a restoration to a crack, as a tight 4" hairline extends from this restored area diagonally through one handle terminal to the underside of the handle. Nicks to inner rim where a lid would rest. Several small base chips.
