Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H. SMITH & CO.," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1825, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied tab handles, decorated with a brushed foliate design extending up the front and a swag and leaf design on the reverse. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from Northern VA. Chips to both handles. Some small base chips. Some in-the-firing glaze flaws at shoulder on reverse. A few worn spots to cobalt on front.
