Two Glazed Redware Jars, probably Great Road, Southwestern VA or Tennessee origin, 19th century, an ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, covered in a streaky, mottled brown lead-and-manganese glaze; paired with a taller jar with heavily-tooled shoulder and flared rim, covered in a crudely-applied lead glaze over a mottled olive and orange ground. Interestingly, the taller jar was fired to a temperature at which the clay began to turn gray and vitrify at the rim. Provenance: Purchased years ago in Eastern Tennessee. Shorter jar slightly out-of-round, with shallow 1 1/4" rim chip, wear to rim, some wear to surface and base, and a 1" flake with 1/4" hole in wall of jar. Taller jar with base and rim chips, wear to rim, and some wear to surface. H (of taller jar) 10 1/4".
