Very Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Chicken Pecking Corn, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1850, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a chicken with spotted tail and heavily-shaded body, pecking kernels of corn from a grassy lawn. Two faint surface lines on underside, not visible on interior. Some spots of very light staining to surface. Stone ping below rim on right side of crock's front. Two other stone pings on reverse. Two chips and a miniscule nick on interior of rim. A chip, a small spot of wear, and a tiny nick to exterior of rim. Some light water glass staining to crock, not affecting the decoration.
