Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant on Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with sloped shoulder and squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head and long tail, perched on tree stump. An unusually large-sized jug for this desirable Norton design. Restored handle. Otherwise minor flaws, including a 3 1/2" horizontal surface line at base of handle, a minor 7/8" hairline on top of spout, a minor glazed-over nick to spout, and a few small, minor worn spots to surface on left side of jug.
