Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Standing Deer Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a large standing deer with heavily-spotted body, flanked by a split-rail fence and pine tree. A highly-prized Norton design. Restoration to several large surface chips or stone pings around body of jug. This restoration includes some filled and touched-up areas to base of decoration and edges of tree. Restoration to underside. Two additional lines to reverse. Four small spout chips.
