Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Large Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J.B. PFALTZGRAFF & CO. / YORK, PA," circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with very large brushed design of a bird with raised wing, feeding from a tulip. A second, which the bird is perched on, extends to the left. Brushed cobalt "5" at shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Significant sealed cracks throughout, including some filled holes and some blue coloring to cracks. A few tiny nicks to one handle. Chip to opposite handle. 1 1/4" filled hole in underside. Additional cracks in underside.
