Very Rare Glazed Redware Soap Dish with Mocha-Style Seaweed Decoration, Pennsylvania origin, possibly John Bell, Waynesboro, PA, mid 19th century, with scalloped body, the top surface with carved semi-circular opening and numerous punched holes. Soap dish coated in cream-colored slip and decorated around the circumference with alternating copper and manganese seaweed designs in the style of English mochaware. Top surface with additional copper daubs. Entire surface covered in a clear lead overglaze. Excellent form with outstanding decorative treatments. Tight horizontal line near top edge, which appears to be in-the-surface only. 1 1/8" in-the-firing separation extending from semi-circular opening on top. Two minor base nicks. H 3 3/8" ; L 5 3/4".
