Important Shenandoah Valley Fraktur of Bell Pottery Family History, 19th century, Printed by John T. Hanzche and J.G. Hanzche, Baltimore, circa 1835, printed fraktur with various hand-colored images, including angels, a Federal eagle, and birds in a tree. Front of fraktur with hand-written birth and death records of Shenandoah Valley potter, Solomon Bell. Bell is listed as born to Peter Bell and his wife Mary, in September of 1817 in Hagerstown, MD. His death record states "Died at Strasburg VA Mar. 16 1882". Reverse with two hand-written Bell family records. The first record discusses the birth dates of Mary and Peter Bell's sons, John, Samuel, Solomon, and Upton. One notation describes Solomon as "Never Married In Partner with Samuel in Strasburg as a Potter". The other record pertains to the sons of John Bell and his wife, Elizabeth Fry, including John William Bell, Edward, Upton Martin Bell, Charles Frederick Bell, and Victor Conrad Bell, with mention of their children as well. Victor Conrad Bell is listed as having "1 daughter Myrtle Elizabeth Deardorff / Still living 35 Potomac St Waynesboro Pa". While the printed fraktur itself dates to circa 1835, it was evidently inscribed with information about Solomon Bell sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century. Family records about the Bell family on the reverse appear to have been added sometime during the first quarter of the 20th century. Included in a late 20th century painted frame. Provenance: Pennypacker Auctions, Reading, PA. Two taped repairs to top edge, visible on reverse. Some minor losses to right edge, fold marks, and foxing. Framed: 19" x 16".
