Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Ja with Folky Cobalt Duck Decoration, Stamped "S. BELL & SON / STRASBURG," Virginia origin, circa 1890, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and squared rim, decorated with a large, lightly-brushed design of a duck with upswept tail, applied over whitish slip. Typical brushed swag decoration around the shoulder. Few figural-decorated examples of stoneware bearing this mark are known. A few small base chips. A rim chip. A shallow, in-the-firing contact mark on top of rim. Some wear to interior of rim. Some crazing to base, not visible on interior and presumably in-the-firing.
