Rare and Fine Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Tulip Decoration, Stamped "A & W BOUGHNER / GREENSBORO / PA," circa 1860, cylindrical jar with incised banding around midsection, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large and elaborate looping vine bearing three tulip blossoms. Base decorated with a brushed cobalt stripe above a cobalt script "5" flanked by swags. Shoulder impressed "A & W BOUGHNER / GREENSBORO / PA" along with a five-gallon capacity mark. Outstanding decoration. One of the finest examples bearing this rare, early Greensboro maker's mark to come on the market in years. Provenance: Descended in a Western PA family to the consignor from her grandmother. A shallow chip to end of one handle and two small nicks to opposite end of same handle. A minor nick to end of other handle. Two 1 1/8" chips and a minor nick on interior of rim.
