Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Dog-and-Basket Decoration, Stamped "LAMSON & SWASEY / PORTLAND, ME," circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a folky slip-trailed design of a standing dog with heavily-striped body, holding a basket in its mouth. Wonderful, human-like face to dog. Heavily-shaded ground below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The words "PORTLAND ME" are inverted. Excellent figural decoration. One of the finer examples of post-1850 Maine stoneware to come on the market in recent years. Thin professionally-colored hairline extending from rim to left of dog. Large, approximately 9 1/2" x 3 1/2" reglued section at rim on reverse. A small chip on interior of rim. Some fairly minor spots of fry to cobalt at base of decoration.
