Scarce Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Quail Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.," circa 1885, semi-ovoid churn with flared rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a quail with turned head, large eye, and crest, perched atop the leaf of a plant. Excellent spotted detail to wing, tail, and face. Slip-trailed "5" to right of maker's mark. 11 3/4" crack extending up side of churn with two smaller cracks extending from it. This crack also continues 7 1/2" onto underside. 3" hairline from rim. Minor 1" on interior of rim, visible as a 1/2" line on exterior of rim. An additional very minor 1/2" line on exterior of rim. Salt drip on side of churn. Small shallow chip on interior of rim. Typical small chips and wear on inner rim. A small worn area on rim.
