Rare and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Rochester, NY Advertising, attributed to John Burger, Rochester, NY, circa 1860, ovoid jug with thick tapered spout, decorated with a slip-trailed flowering plant design featuring a central blossom and three buds. Slip-trailed "2." above. Shoulder impressed with the cobalt-highlighted advertising "J. COCHRANE. / WHOLESALE & RETAIL DEALER IN / GROCERIES & PROVISIONS. / WINES & LIQUORS &C,&C, / NO. 28 MAIN ST. ROCHESTER.". Examples of Burger advertising stoneware are much rarer than his signed work. Excellent, essentially as-made condition.
