Very Rare Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Deer Decoration, Stamped "T. HARRINGTON / LYONS," New York State origin, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a deer with heavily-spotted body, trotting atop a nicely-detailed ground flanked by shrubs. Slip-trailed "2" above. Cobalt stripes through maker's mark. Includes original salt-glazed lid, stamped "2". Deer decorations on vessels of this size are scarce. Few Thompson Harrington deer designs are known. Heavy chipping to rim. Chips to inner rim where lid rests. A chip to one handle. Two chips to knob, one of which is glazed-over. 5" crack from rim on reverse. Small chips to edge of lid.
