Very Fine and Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Deer and Tree Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK & CO. / LYONS," New York State origin, circa 1845, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a deer with large rack and striped body, walking in front of a pine tree atop a leafy vine. A wonderful figural design with excellent color, decorating an impressive, large-sized churn form. An extremely rare design for this particular maker’s mark. Top-to-bottom crack to right of deer, extending onto underside where it forms a thin Y. Small chip to one handle. Minor glazed-over iron ping behind one handle terminal, visible on reverse. A faint, short surface line on interior of rim. An iron ping near base. A few minor chips on interior of rim.
