Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H. SMITH & CO." and Incised "M," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1825, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied tab handles, decorated with a stylized brushed floral design encompassing the maker's mark with foliate trails extending from it. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Underside incised "M" in script, presumably for the noted Alexandria potter, Benedict C. Milburn. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in New England. Losses to handles. 6 1/4" very tight spidering line extending up front of jar, a small section of which is visible on interior. A hairline extending across underside. Additional very faint surface lines to underside, which extend a few inches up base around circumference of jar and are not visible on interior. A small base chip and tiny base nick.
