One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SMITH & DAY / NORWALK," Connecticut origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed cobalt drape design on one side and cobalt highlights to the handle terminals. Reverse impressed "SMITH & DAY" above the number "1". Includes a stoneware lid with light Albany slip glaze, possibly original to the jar. Good form and color with desirable maker's mark. Jar in excellent condition with two tiny, minor chips on top of rim. Lid with two edge chips and a 1 1/8" hairline.
