Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with squared spout, the front decorated with a brushed cobalt design of a man's face with long nose and large eye, flanked by leaves. Crossed accent to leaf tip. A popular and highly-prized Cowden & Wilcox design. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in New Jersey. Lower section of cobalt face did not survive the firing. Some fry to cobalt. A few base chips. A few in-the-firing lines in handle, which do not extend entirely through handle. A tiny nick to spout directly to right of handle.
