Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Dated 1860, Western PA origin, cylindrical jar with incised banding around midsection, tooled shoulder, and flatted rim, decorated with a boldly-brushed freehand "2" featuring a scrolled end, flanked by vertical swags. The date "1860" is brushed in small numbers inside of the number "2". Decoration applied over a slip-coated surface. Additional impressed two-gallon capacity mark on shoulder. Large Y-shaped surface line on reverse, not visible on interior. Otherwise excellent condition.
