Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration and Inscription "5 Gal," attributed to J. Eberly & Bro., Strasburg, VA, circa 1885, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an elaborate swag and hanging flower design on the front and back. The large, underscored inscription "5 Gal" extending from left side of jar's front, under one handle, to base of jar. Additionally inscribed "5 Ga" under opposite handle. A wonderfully-decorated example of Eberly stoneware with design in the Solomon Bell style. Large loss to handle. Chip to opposite handle. Long vertical surface line on one side, not visible on interior.
