Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Impressed Eagle Medallions and Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "S. MONTZ," Ohio origin, mid 19th century, nicely-potted ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with three impressed medallions featuring eagles below the maker's mark. These medallions also include the embossed word "PATENT" as well as other writing, which is not visible. It is likely that the potter created this stamp out of a decorative metal object from the period, perhaps a button. Front is additionally decorated with an elaborate cobalt tulip plant, accented with spots. Excellent decoration, rare mark, and unusually small size. Remarkable condition with one glazed-over rim chip. H 9 3/8".
