Unusual Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Floral Decoration and Inscribed Cobalt "S," Manhattan, NY origin, late 18th or early 19th century, ovoid jug with rounded foot and tooled spout with rounded rim, the shoulder decorated with an incised foliate spray meticulously-highlighted in cobalt slip. Cobalt stripes at top of the handle and circular cobalt decoration around ends of handle. Unusual cobalt "S" at base of handle, perhaps signifying the maker of the jug. Sunken area at base on reverse. Large salt and clay mark on shoulder of jug. In-the-firing flaws to side of jug including a few flaked spots. Tight lines around base. Some stone pings to surface.
