Scarce Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Butter Crock, Stenciled "JAMES HAMILTON & CO. / MANUFACTURERS / GREENSBORO, PA.," circa 1875, short, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, decorated with an abstract stenciled design at the center, cobalt stripes at the rim and base, and an unusual bold-faced stenciled "1 1/2" with flourish to the right. Good color. One of the more unusual Western PA stoneware forms to find. 4" hairline from rim on front. 4" X-shaped surface line on side of crock, which does not go through to interior. Chip to shoulder molding.
